This exhibition Colour Me Blind (© Gerry O'Boyle) of new works by artist Laura Eldret takes the context of a project in a furniture shop as a primary prompt. The artist masquerades as a designer with a body of work executed in a monochrome black & white palette, with a key piece being an unlimited edition upholstery fabric.
Eldret's practice manifests in many forms from object to performance. She constantly searches for the point of co-existence of contradictions, believing that one extremity is defined by the other. In this body of work she works with Black-and-White for its multiple understandings; as a point of absolute, as co-dependant opposites and it's aesthetically pleasing quality.
The artist designed fabric specially created for this show is an intervention within the furnished environment. It takes the notion of the artist's hand to the extreme, with fabric made to order and each batch specially rendered by the artist's hand, creating something that it is both an unlimited edition and a unique artwork. The fabric design takes the classic black and white stripe as a starting point, free hand markings are layered on and inverted, creating a sophisticated pattern which is both sequenced and random.
52 Metres is a furniture shop that presents art projects as an antidote to the white cube. Providing a hyperbolic domestic space that addresses the re-translation of contemporary artists practice in furnished environments. www.52meters.com
